Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a therapeutic approach that combines elements of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) with concepts from Eastern philosophy. Developed by psychologist Dr. Marsha M. Linehan in the 1980s, the core dialectic in DBT is finding a balance between acceptance and change. It acknowledges the individual’s need for acceptance and validation of their experiences while also emphasizing the importance of acquiring new skills and making positive changes in their lives.

DBT aims to assist individuals in regulating their emotions, managing distress, improving interpersonal relationships, and developing skills for tolerating and coping with challenging situations. It operates on the principle that people often experience intense emotions and struggle with self-destructive behaviours due to a combination of biological factors, environmental influences, and a lack of effective coping strategies.

DBT has shown effectiveness in treating various mental health conditions. It emphasizes a non-judgmental and compassionate approach, encouraging acceptance and validation while also promoting change and skill development.
