Frequently Asked Questions

Family mediation is a voluntary dispute resolution process that focuses on maintaining respect between parties experiencing conflict. It is primarily used to help couples resolve legal issues related to their separation/divorce. Family mediation is effective in helping couples negotiate parenting plans and separation agreements in a non-confrontational manner. The role of the mediator is to work with the couple as a neutral third party and help focus discussions on issues and concerns they are not able to resolve on their own. During the separation period, many couples seek the assistance of a family mediator to help navigate issues such as: property division, child support, spousal support or parenting.

During our consultation call, I will learn more about your particular situation and work with you to decide if mediation is the right approach. If you are ready to proceed and book an appointment, the first step would be individual intake and introduction sessions. This would be followed by joint mediation sessions. Once an agreement is reached, I will work to draft a mediation report which you will bring to your individual lawyers and seek independent legal advice on. You will sign the agreement with your lawyers and keep copies of the agreement.

At Better Space, we offer both in-person or virtual mediation sessions and they are both appropriate options. It really depends on your preference and comfort.

The number of family mediation sessions depends on the issues that need to be resolved and their complexity.

The fee structure for mediation services is as follows:

– $250 for initial 90-minute individual intake sessions

– $200/hour for joint mediation sessions and agreement drafting.

Mediation sessions can be scheduled in blocks of 2-3 hours to help you navigate issues and move forward in a timely manner.
